Traveling over a holiday weekend is notoriously expensive but you can still get a great deal in times of high demand.
Even though 2014 summer travel was up overall, Labor Day weekend prices this year are about 4 percent lower, according to a new report from travel site Hopper. The data was compiled from the site’s combined feed of Global Distribution Service (GDS) data sources which analyzes billions of trips per day.
Depending on where you start and where you want to go, Hopper estimates that you can still find a good deal if you’re flying close to home—generally flights under three hours. Althought there are exceptions. Fly Atlanta (ATL) to Vegas (LAS) for under $400. Or Chicago (ORD) to Los Angeles (LAX) for $308. In the full report, they break it down by some of the country’s biggest cities.
If you have a little flexible, flying just after the holiday can save you big bucks—up to 40 percent in some of the biggest markets including Dallas, Seattle, Orlando, and New Orleans.
But if you hate crowds, you may want to avoid the most popular U.S. destinations this Labor Day.
According to Hopper, these airports are:
- Las Vegas (LAS)
- Chicago (ORD)
- Denver (DEN)
- New York (LGA)
- Atlanta (ATL)
- Los Angeles (LAX)
- Newark (EWR)
- New York (JFK)
- Orlando (MCO)
- Seattle (SEA)
